About a year and a half ago, my husband and I made the switch to organic milk. We did it primarily because of all the research out there about the hormones and additives that are in regular milk. I would have never believed just how much better the organic tasted. The first time we tried it we were amazed – and healthier to boot! What a deal! We’ll never go back.
1 Peter 2:2-3 says, “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” I have been a Lutheran educator for over 30 years. I have “tasted that the Lord is good” in both my ministry and my private life. Yet, how many times are we tempted by the “junk food” that this world offers?
I look at my students, at their families, and myself, and I see the myriad of choices that lay before us all. Our technology literally lays the world at our fingertips – what a blessing, but also what an overwhelming challenge. Do we long for pure spiritual milk, God’s Word and will for our lives? Or are we simply overwhelmed by all the pressures and ideas that seem to be a 24/7 stream constantly barraging us? Sometimes, in our day-to-day living, as we simply try to keep up with the demands others place on us and those we place on ourselves, do we even stop and think about desiring that which God would have us desire?
We need to look to Jesus who, in the most difficult of situations, not only longed for spiritual milk, but went to the source of the supply, His Father. Christ is our model. As we are faced with so many things that this world has to offer, we need to take a step back, a step away, a step into the Word that guides us and nourishes us. In His infinite mercy, God feeds us with pure spiritual milk, and He offers us His very Self in His body and blood. Then, even in the midst of the hustle and bustle around us, we can share with those around us that, indeed, the Lord is good!
