A Light FOR the World2 min read

lightoftheworld“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV).

Light is an incredible thing. Without it there is only darkness. Light allows us to see. It is the basis for the growth of many living things. How are we a light FOR the world to see Christ in us?

“Being a Light for the World” is our focus for this summer’s High School Youth Gathering on Mackinac Island. Jesus, our Light, is the reason that we are lights. Without the gift of salvation through Christ, there would be no light in us to shine.

Through various speakers, musicians, pastors, and teachers, the youth attending the gathering will experience Jesus: the Light of salvation. They will learn of the Christ that gives purpose and meaning to their lives. It is also Christ that gives us a reason to gather together this summer at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island. The Gathering experience includes hearing God’s Word, attending mass events and breakout sessions, being inspired, and serving the community. This summer’s presenters includes Bob Lenz, Sevenglory, Tina Marie Griffin, 321 Improv, The Living Stones, Swen & Dean, Rev. Bill Yonker, Rev. Tige and Sara Culbertson, Brian Pruitt, and Rev. Scott Giger.

Blessings abound at District youth gatherings. Here are a few quotes from past participants:

“I loved this! I’ve learned so much. It was a unique experience. Thank you so much for reminding me that Jesus loves me.”

“I have never been to a gathering before, but for me it was awesome! There was a common fellowship shared by everyone there and my faith was really strengthened.”

“Our focus now is to carry everything we saw, heard, and learned and continue to spread that excitement at home, school, and church!”

These responses give a snapshot on how these gatherings can foster the excitement and enthusiasm in a teen’s spiritual walk. Through a variety of activities – worship, servant events, and instructional sessions – their growing faith will be nurtured. For some it is a starting point, for others it is encouragement to continue in their journey with Jesus.

The High School Youth Gathering committee’s prayer is that all of our congregations seriously consider supporting their youth and encourage them to attend the 2014 Michigan District High School Youth Gathering. For more information, visit www.michigandistrict.org/hsyouth14.
