On Tuesday, November 11, Concordia University Ann Arbor held its 7th annual Veterans Day celebration. It was a day full of festivities that began with a welcome ceremony in the gymnasium; dignitaries were present, as well as people from local businesses. Afterwards, there was a special Chapel service featuring the CUAA choir and a Flag Presentation Ceremony to honor Carl Heldt, a WW II Veteran. The preacher for the chapel service was Chaplain, LTC (USAF ANG) Kurt Taylor. A lunch program at the Black Box followed. Seminars and presentations happened throughout the day, including a Coast Guard helicopter demonstration and gear exhibits. Dr. Robert McCormick, Dean of Arts and Sciences at CUAA and retired Lt. Colonel from the US Army, said: “We try to use some music that’s used during military time as well, so we’ve played some bugle calls and had a retreat ceremony at the campus flagpole.”
McCormick explained why Concordia holds these celebrations:
“It’s a way for us to teach something to the students about history, about patriotism, and about the service of our armed forces. Sometimes students really don’t know, so we try to demonstrate that through the ceremonies and the events at Concordia. It’ll certainly be something that will continue.”
